Trend Watch: Gems with Jeans & on Purse Straps—Chic Italian Style

Combining sparkly jewelry with jeans is not a new trend, but it may have reached new heights with this current ad from the Italian fashion house Blumarine.

The model wears a crystal*-embellished tee shirt and jeans and adorns herself with huge crystal ear clips, several strands of crystals around her neck, a lavishly embellished purse with an across-body strand of crystals standing in as a strap, a pair of bangles on one wrist and a third bangle on the other wrist, and three large, mismatched starburst brooches at the front pocket of her jeans. The entire ensemble is topped off with a close fitting dark jacket with sleeves that end just past her elbows.

[*I am guessing that all the jewelry and embellishments are set with crystals; I was unsuccessful in obtaining verification about the material in my web research.]

The model is very long-waisted, and the long strands of beads emphasize her long, lean form. Wearing the purse strap under the jacket is a secure yet insouciant way of keeping her valuables close to her chest. The earrings, large clips that sit on her earlobes, are of a clean, modern design. And the brooches at her jeans pocket are an unusual and fun placement—an extraordinary example of the versatility of brooches.

With the sheer amount of jewelry and its placement, a number of style rules are being broken here. Feast your eyes and see if inspiration strikes!

Incidentally, chain-strap bags are an important trend for fall 2009, one of “The New Outfit-Makers,” according to the fall 2009 makeover issue of InStyle magazine. How interesting to swap out a plain purse strap for something lavishly embellished. The potential fragility of an embellished chain is a concern, of course. That’s one practical reason for the model to wear the Blumarine purse across her body under her jacket, where the bag will be pushed and pulled a great deal less than if it were hanging freely off her shoulder.
