Trend Watch: Ethereal Styles for End of Summer

It’s time to savor the remains of the summer, before autumn arrives in all its colorful glory. To keep one’s cool when the weather is hot (and especially when it’s humid), one might well take a contrarian approach to jewelry and all the big, chunky necklaces and multiple bracelets that are very much in style.

As depicted in the July 2009 issue of Lucky magazine, a countervailing trend for the summer is a look that embodies a lightness of spirit. “Ethereal draping and woodland accents call forth the delicate otherworldliness of fairies,” is how Lucky describes this mood dressing.

To complement the wisps of light layers of fabric that skim the body in misty pastel colors, jewelry needs to have a similar lightness of design. Lucky includes two items of jewelry in its collage of photos, one a gold-filled “Fairy” necklace from MC2, described: “The glistening crystal amulet and [fairy] charm are set off by whisper-thin chain links.”

The magazine’s second selection of jewelry is actually two stacked rings in sterling silver by Swallow, the “Double Jasmine” ring and the “Bud” ring. The openwork design of these irregularly shaped pieces charmingly reminds of branches.

Wearing delicate jewelry that reminds one of leafy bowers or depicts mischievous sprites can put one in a happy frame of mind. Other jewelry designs can also contribute to this effect. For instance, the inclusion of drusy as a design element also conveys this magical mood, as the crystal-covered stones shimmer and sparkle like fairy dust.

Beyond the visual beauty of jewelry, the tinkling of delicate charms on a bracelet or dangles on a set of earrings can be a carefree sound that just might put one in a happy, summer-like state of mind.
