Trend Watch: Embellished Hoop Earrings

All manner of retro influences have been significant this season. One style of earring that has had a resurgence is the bead-adorned or otherwise embellished hoop. The 60’s-inspired boho look once again recycles through the fashion world, particularly among those young enough to view this style as something entirely new. This style of earrings is being worn not only with flirty dresses and trendy harem pants but also with long, ethnic print casual dresses and sandals, definitely giving a sense of déjà vu to those who remember the hippie era.

Some of the embellishments are rigidly attached to the hoops; other earrings have hanging components that move or tremble and catch the eye.

This style has been showing up in fashion spreads over the last several months. For example, the February 2009 issue of In Style magazine features a couple of rigid designs: Eva Longoria Parker in silver earrings by Jessica Hicks and Viv & Ingrid coral- and jade-encrusted gold-filled hoops.

The March 2009 issue of Elle magazine features two designs tremblant – coral hoop earrings by Couture Couture Los Angeles and an elaborate doorknocker version with extravagant dangles by Jose and Maria Barrera.

The doorknocker is one variation. Another variation of this look is achieved by hanging charms on simple hoop earrings. Clusters of mismatched charms create a playful effect.

I like the choice of embellished double hoop gold earrings by Padma seen on actress Elizabeth Banks on the cover of the May 2009 issue of Lucky magazine.

  • The elongated oval shape of the earrings is the inversion of the shape of Banks’ face, which is wider at her hairline than at her jaw. These earrings would be a less than optimal choice for someone with a wide jawline, as they would draw the eye low and visually drag that face down.
  • Because of Banks’ relatively high-set ears, the dangles fall at about the level of her mouth, emphasizing her smile and her straight white teeth. The curve of the earrings is reminiscent of the curve of her smile.
  • The dangles give the earrings a fun, youthful look that complements the actress’s sunny style.
  • Notice too how the double row of dangles relates to the double ruffle on the shoulder of Banks’ dress, a subtle repetition of a design element.

Embellished hoop earrings, in any of their many variations, are a spirited addition to any woman’s jewelry wardrobe.
