Trend Watch: Big, Bigger, Biggest Earrings at the Primetime Emmy Awards

If the economy is in a slump, one wouldn’t know it by watching the 60th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards yesterday evening. Jewelers pulled out all the stops in adorning their favorite actresses with earrings that can be seen a city block away.

Although diamond studs, clusters and hoops had a presence on the red carpet, far and away the bigger trend was bigger earrings – unapologetically huge earrings, typically executed in diamonds. Earrings with some width (narrow stiletto shapes not being favored) but with serious length – four, five, six inches and longer, if my calculations are correct, which seems to be running on a parallel track with the heel heights of shoes being promoted this season. The earrings designs were some of the most spectacular I have ever seen in years of following red carpet jewels.

Among the most exuberant diamond earrings were:

  • Chandeliers and multiple drops on Chandra Wilson, Christina Applegate, Rita Wilson and Jean Smart.
  • Waterfall designs on Jane Krakowski and Candice Bergen.
  • Drops ending in starbursts on Debra Messing.
  • Long geometric designs on Mary Tyler Moore and Vanessa Williams
  • Double or triple segmented long earrings on Jenna Fischer, Cynthia Nixon and Kathy Griffin.
  • Other extraordinary and huge diamond earrings designs on Oprah Winfrey, Brooke Shields and Kate Walsh, all of which I can’t wait to see in close-up photographs.

Also notable were huge gold earrings on Mariska Hargitay and Padma Lakshmi and

the creatively mismatched positive/negative earrings worn by Tina Fey.

Heidi Klum, as one of the reality show hosts for the evening, had several costume changes and wore earrings that ranged from saucer-sized lavender jade butterflies by Lorraine Schwartz to huge teardrops to earrings of six inches or more in length that appeared to end with a huge floral motif at the bottom.

Earrings were not the only featured jewels. Brooches appeared at the waists of the gowns of Brooke Shields and Melora Hardin and accented the décolletage of the gown of Lauren Conrad. Bracelets and cuffs of diamonds and gold continued to be popular, almost omnipresent. Huge cocktail rings also had a strong presence.

Strands of diamonds worn as hairbands were favored by some of the younger celebrities, such as January Jones, picking up on a trend popularized by “Gossip Girl.” The headband with jeweled flower worn by Christina Hendricks was especially fetching.

And my favorite necklace of the evening was the complex Fred Leighton design of antique diamonds in a perfect length worn beautifully by America Ferrara. The diamond necklaces adorning the necks of Nicollette Sheridan and Jennifer Love Hewitt were also spectacular.

I’ll talk more about some of the earrings designs and how they relate to the features of the women wearing them in upcoming posts. Stay tuned!
