Trend File: It’s Hip To Be Square

In both bridal and fashion jewelry design, the hexagon is having a very good run this year. The sophisticated shape has connected in a big way with consumers and has been translated at every price point.

But there’s a hot, new geometric in town. Designers en masse are suddenly embracing a less lofty shape. In short, it’s hip to be square.

But certainly not bland, or even basic. Designers are using the square as a starting point for exciting pieces that play with elements and nuances such as negative space, mixed materials, and irreverent gem mashups.

Here are a few squared-off looks I’m currently loving.

Double square platinum and diamond studs, $4,400; TAP by Todd Pownell
