Trend Alert: The Hashtag Ring

Khai Khai Jewelry’s hashtag diamond ring

An $825 gold and diamond hashtag ring is getting tons of social buzz.

The 18k yellow gold ring, which is available at Bloomingdale’s, has .1 ct. t.w. diamonds. It is designed by Khai Khai Jewelry, a New York company founded by designer Haim Medine. Other Internet- and pop culture–inspired pieces on its website include a Thumbs Up ring ($1,300); a Hashtag Charm necklace ($950); At “@” earrings ($1,110); and a necklace with the word Kale written in script and with tsavorites ($750).

The Today Show called the ring “tailor-made for the social media age.” Mashable quipped, “If you like social media, you should probably put a hashtag ring on it.” TechCrunch, worried about what the $825 ring says about culture, asked, “Why does this diamond hashtag ring exist?” and “Does this point to the high water mark in social media where the lowly hashtag has become so popular that it deserves its own bling?” BuzzFeed, Jezebel, Business Insider, and the New York Daily News all reported on the piece as well.

Perhaps you are already familiar with the trend—we are. We featured Khai Khai’s hashtag ring—along with a host of other iconic jewels—in the December 2013 issue of JCK. Check them all out here
