Toronto Jewelry Co. Among First to Offer Jewelry With Fairtrade Fairmined Gold

Toronto-based Fair Trade Jewellery Company was named North America’s first registered Operator for Fairtrade Fairmined Gold, the company announced Feb. 14.

The certification ensures the company’s ecological metals—platinum and gold—are traceable and are independently audited to comply with the Fairtrade Fairmined standards from the mine forward.

The company sources metals from the Condoto community mines in Colombia. The Condoto miners do not used toxic chemicals like cyanide or mercury, which present challenges associated with industrial mining and prospecting activities.

“As FLO’s first registered Fairtrade Fairmined jeweler in North America, every Fairtrade Fairmined Certified Product we craft can be verified,” Ryan Taylor, designer goldsmith and found of FTJCo, said in a statement. “We as goldsmiths are now able to source Ecological Gold that is mined under positive social, labor, and environmental conditions.”
