Timepiece wins design award

Jacob & Co. was honored for the big, bold, design of its “The World is Yours” timepiece by one of the world’s leading travel magazines.

Travel + Leisure magazine presented the New York based company with one of its 2006 Design Awards during a cocktail reception at Cedar Lake Theater in New York City. The second annual competition honored products and destinations that underscore the significance of design in the traveler’s world.

All of the winning entries were exhibited in a museum like setting during the reception on Wednesday.

Eleven of the big and bold watches of various colors were displayed in a glass bubble case. The watches, 47-mm in size, feature a diamond-encrusted world map, using colored diamonds to form the continents and oceans. Company founder, Jacob Arabo, said the combinations of designs within this style are endless and he continues to expand the design each year with the use of different colors and materials forming the map. It gives the precise time in Paris, New York, Tokyo, and L.A. The watch is an extension of his, “Five Time Zone Collection,” which he created in 2002 and is very popular with globe-trekking celebrities.

Arabo attended the event accepting the compliments of well wishers and taking pictures with Nancy Novogrod, Travel + Leisure editor-in-chief.

All of the winners received a custom-engraved Baccarat crystal trophy, which were also on display at the event.

The winners were selected from among hundreds of nominations by a jury of six experts in fashion, design, and architecture: Barbara Barry, Michael Kors, Richard Meier, Alice Rawsthorn, Calvin Tsao, and Angela Westwater. The jury was moderated by Travel + Leisure contributing design editor Chee Pearlman.

In brief remarks, Novogrod said that great design makes travel more enjoyable as well as provide a destination for travelers.

“These winning designs and projects make travel all the more compelling,” Novogrod, said. “They will be a great inspiration for the readers of T+L, who are always looking for new places—and new products to make their travels easier and more stylish.”
