It’s the first time the United States has topped the list in nine years
In July, the United States stood as the world’s largest market for Swiss watches, unseating traditional champ Hong Kong for the first time in nine years.
The United States was the destination for 10.9 percent of Swiss watch exports during the month; 10.7 percent came to Hong Kong.
The last time the United States topped the list was in October 2007, says Jean-Daniel Pasche, president of the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry, which releases the monthly statistics.
Both the United States and Hong Kong, however, saw declines in Swiss watch imports during July, yet another downbeat month for the Swiss watch business. Exports to the United States during the month fell 14.7 percent; exports to Hong Kong sank 33 percent. Overall, Swiss watch exports fell 14.2 percent during the month.
For 2016, Hong Kong remains the leading watch market.
