The Royal-Adjacent Ring

A new sparkler wows London

Another sparkly engagement ring is making headlines and being added to Pinterest boards, this one on the hand of Pippa Middleton, the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, aka Kate Middleton.

The younger Middleton debuted the ring in July soon after confirming her engagement with a statement: “Miss Pippa Middleton and Mr. James Matthews are delighted to announce they became engaged on Sunday, July 17, and plan to marry next year.”

Congratulations are in order, but the ring, of course, is what we are interested in—and plenty of other people are, too, judging by the number of articles about the Art Deco ring, which is set in either white gold or platinum.

People reports that the ring designer hasn’t stepped forward (is it you?), but the magazine has checked in with some London designers to get their takes.

“It’s not indicative of a particular jewelry house or designer, more of a period,” David Christopher Allen of London’s 77 Diamonds told People.  “When The Great Gatsby film came out a few years ago, Tiffany did a collection featuring similar things. It’s more of a style by era than a jewelry house. It doesn’t scream out one particular designer. It is an Asscher-cut diamond, and in order to get a beautiful cut, the diamond needs to be of top clarity.”

He estimates that the center stone could be worth more than $250,000.

Until a designer comes forward, speculation and admiration abound. “Pippa Middleton engagement ring” already has a half million results on Google. Call it the Pippa effect.
