A memorial tribute to Steven Kretchmer, master goldsmith and metallurgist, will be held 6:30 p.m., July 31 at the Reeves Great Hall at Fashion Institute of Technology, 27th Street and 7th Avenue.

Kretchmer is best known for perfecting the tension setting, a method of holding a diamond within the embrace of specially alloyed and treated metal, and more recently for a secret formula of magnetic platinum that appeared to float. His metallurgical work also produced other discoveries, including purple and blue gold.
Kretchmer, 52, of Palenville, N.Y.was killed in a motorcycle accident in nearby Woodstock.
