TAG Heuer Suspends Relationship With Maria Sharapova After Failed Drug Test

The Russian tennis star has represented the brand for more than a decade

Maria Sharapova, the Russian tennis star who admitted on March 7 that she tested positive for the banned substance meldonium, will no longer serve as a brand ambassador to TAG Heuer.

She had been in talks with the watch brand to extend her contract, which had ended on Dec. 31, 2015. The brand said that it had suspended negotiations after the announcement.

Sharapova has been a TAG Heuer ambassador since 2004, when she was just 17.

The full statement from a TAG Heuer spokeperson: “Maria Sharapova was under contract with TAG Heuer until December 31, 2015. We had been in talks to extend our collaboration. In view of the current situation, the Swiss watch brand has suspended negotiations.”
