Leibish Co. purple orchid diamondLeibish & Co. Unveils the Purple Orchid Diamond

Fancy colored diamond jewelry company Leibish & Co. unveiled its Purple Orchid diamond, a rare 3.37 ct. fancy intense pinkish-purple VS2 diamond.

Unearthed from a mine in South Africa—one of the only mines in the world purple diamonds can be found—the stone generated interest as it traveled around a number of main diamond trading hubs. Leibish’s chief diamond buyer Shmulik Polnauer flew to India after hearing about the stone and purchased it from an anonymous owner after four days of negotiations.

“The cause of purple in diamonds remains a mystery, which only adds to the glamour and attractiveness of diamonds like these,” said company president Leibish Polnauer. “There are very, very few diamonds on the market above 3 carats with purple as the main color, which is what makes this exquisite diamond so rare.”

The diamond—valued at $4 million—will be on public display for the first time at the upcoming Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair Sept. 17–21.

Heraeus Earns ISO Certification

Newark, N.J.–based precious-metals recycling facility Heraeus has received its ISO 9001:2008 certification for its quality management system, a prestigious certification previously achieved by its Sante Fe Springs, Calif., and Wartburg, Tenn., facilities.

Accepted worldwide as the standard that defines quality, the ISO 9001:2008 provides the necessary framework for companies to improve efficiency, minimize operational risk, and maximize opportunity. Companies in consideration must undergo a rigorous evalutation and accreditation process to verify that they meet the high standards.

“It is obviously a great achievement for the project team,” said vice president of commercial management Alan Semko. “But the most important aspect of this journey is not the certification, but providing greater value to our customers, like maximizing the yields from customer materials and faster turnaround times. The ISO standard is a reflection of the high standards we set as a company to deliver the highest quality in everything we do.”
