Naomi Sarna Wins Big at the AGTA Spectrum Awards 2013

Naomi Sarna, one of the world’s finest gemstone carvers and jewelry designers, claimed four awards at the 2013 Naomi Sarna tanzaniteAGTA Spectrum and Cutting Edge Awards. The competition, which celebrated its 29th year, was judged Oct. 20–21 in New York City.

Sarna won first and second places in carving, as well as a first place prize in the Phenomenal and Men’s categories. The star of the show was Sarna’s tanzanite carving, for which the designer traveled to Tanzania to obtain the 725 ct. stone—the largest-ever carved tanzanite. Its very appropriate name, “l’Heure Blue,” is known to be the time before sunrise or sunset on a perfect day.

“Who can resist the unique depth of color that is tanzanite, no matter the shade?” said Sarna. “It’s fascinating to me that after all these centuries, tanzanite was so recently discovered—the opportunity to work with such extraordinary material was a rare treat. The proceeds of my carving will benefit a group of local Masai ladies whom I had the pleasure of teaching while I was at the TanzaniteOne mine.”
