Fred Segal to Expand to Japanese Market

In the fall of 2013, Fred Segal will make its way to Japan. As part of a long-term partnership formed between business group Mark Styler and Sandow, rights holder of the Fred Segal brand, Mitsubishi Corporation Fashion Co., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp., will manufacture Fred Segal-branded product for distribution in the Japanese market. This deal marks the first time in more than 50 years that the Fred Segal name has been used outside its original Los Angeles locations.

The first stand-alone Fred Segal flagship store, slated to open in Tokyo in September, will feature a mix of luxury products from Fred Segal and other independent brands and also will feature a salon and spa. The Tokyo debut will be followed by several retail locations in other key Japanese cities.

“The Japanese level of sophistication when it comes to fashion/lifestyle brands, coupled with their understanding and appreciation for the authenticity and appeal of Fred Segal, made us focus on this market first,” said Adam I. Sandow, chairman and CEO of Sandow Media. “Mark Styler is a well-established player in the retail industry that intends to preserve the integrity of Fred Segal, making it the perfect steward for our brand in Japan.”
