Diamond Club West Coast Attends GIA Monthly Luncheon
Members from Diamond Club West Coast (DCWC) attended the August luncheon meeting hosted by Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Los Angeles, where Phillip Yantzer, vice president of laboratory operations for GIA, gave a comprehensive update on GIA’s laboratory activities.
Topics of Yantzer’s discussion included the qualitative measures taken by GIA to maintain the high standard of grading set by the lab. The audience also discussed inconsistencies in diamond reports, perceived inconsistencies between stones emerging from differing GIA labs, the results produced by tech machinery compared to human graders, the need to create more distinction between natural and lab-grown diamonds, and questions about emerging technologies for more subjective grading (cut, make, and inclusions).
“GIA reports must go farther to distinguish between natural and lab-grown diamonds in order to allow the consumer to make the best decision that is aligned with their interest,” said DCWC president Moshe Salem in a statement.
