South Carolina Jeweler Arrested for Not Having Secondhand License

A jeweler in Columbia, S.C., has been arrested for allegedly buying merchandise without a proper secondhand permit.

Gregory Wayne Gibson, owner of Gibson Jewelers, was charged with 15 counts of violating local precious metals laws.

According to a release from the Columbia Police Department, in September Gibson allegedly purchased more than $149,000 worth of jewelry. The permit allowing him to purchase secondhand items expired in September 2015, according to the CPD release.

That jewelry turned out to have been stolen from local homes.

“Investigators are working to determine if Gibson knew the merchandise was stolen when he purchased the items,” the release added.

The Jewelers Vigilance Committee recommends that any jeweler who buys from the public stay in compliance with local laws.

Gibson could not be reached for comment.
