Pinterest Gives Users More Control Over AI Content in Feeds

Pinterest is adding controls for users that can reduce the amount of AI they see in their feeds. As AI content expands, users have told Pinterest it’s negatively affecting their in-app experience. Now they can switch some of it off via the “refine your recommendations” option in settings.

“Generative AI content is rapidly transforming the internet, now making up an incredible 57% of all online material,” Pinterest said in its announcement of the new tools. “At Pinterest, we’ve heard from our users: They want the creativity and inspiration they love, with the right balance of human and AI-generated content. That’s why we’re leading the way in giving users more control over their experience, launching new controls that allow users to decide exactly how much GenAI content appears in their feed.”

This is a good start, but not a guarantee, for people who don’t want to see AI-created content. The new controls only block content that is either self-reported or identified by Pinterest as AI or that comes from automated systems developed by Pinterest.

“We’re always listening for feedback, so expect even more additions in the future,” Pinterest added.

Snapchat Announces AR Updates

At its annual Lens Fest event, Snapchat previewed new augmented reality (AR) creation elements, generative AI guidance for AR development, games  tools, AR creator monitization, and more.

With the addition of generative AI, augmented and virtual reality have gotten easier to create, simplifying a process that once involved highly complex programming elements.

“Just describe what you want, and Lens Studio AI helps you bring it to life. It can write code, guide you step-by-step, generate full Lenses, debug, and even suggest assets,” said a Snapchat statement. “Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, Lens Studio AI meets you where you are to get you from idea to published lens faster than ever.”

These enhancements could help jewelry brands create try-on content, using AR to showcase how their pieces might look on consumers.

Threads Adds Group Chats, Europe DMs

As evidence of the growth of Threads as an alternative to X, the Meta-owned platform has built out its messaging options to include group chats and has extended DM access to its European user base.

Threads group chats can include up to 50 other users, and new members can be added by someone they follow. This feature should improve community engagement on Threads. On other social platforms (like Instagram), more engagement is switching to direct messaging, so expanding the DM capability—as well as adding group chats—is a smart move for Threads as it tries to overtake X in usage.
