Instagram’s New Edits App Tops 7M Downloads

Instagram recently debuted Edits, a separate app designed to help users edit their video content, similar to ByteDance’s CapCut app for TikTok.

“The process of making videos can be challenging, often requiring multiple apps and complicated workflows,” said Instagram in an announcement. “With Edits, you now have a dedicated space with powerful capabilities for video creation.”

The app offers multichannel editing, searchable trends for creating the most up-to-date Reels, a project management tab for creating multiple Reels, video effects, royalty-free music, and more.

Upon release, the app garnered more than 7 million downloads, the majority of which were surprisingly on Android (5.9 million downloads versus 1.2 million iOS downloads). The new app hit No. 1 on the U.S. iPhone App Store’s charts and at press time ranked No. 1 in photo and video with 4.6 stars across nearly 2,000 ratings—pretty darn good.

So if TikTok does finally (ever?) bite the dust in the United States, Meta seems poised and ready.

Facebook Offering New Ways To Combat Spam

Seeing spammy comments on your Facebook posts? Meta recently announced new ways to combat those on the platform, as the rise of inauthentic profiles for engagement continues.

The overuse of hashtags is one of the things Facebook is looking to target, so hashtaggers beware—rein in the number you’re using so as not to be confused with spammers.

“Some accounts post content with long, distracting captions, often with an inordinate amount of hashtags,” said Meta in a statement. “While others include captions that are completely unrelated to the content—think a picture of a cute dog with a caption about airplane facts. Accounts that engage in these tactics will only have their content shown to their followers and will not be eligible for monetization.”

It seems Meta isn’t focused on eliminating these spam accounts altogether, but rather rendering them ineligible for monetization, which is the ultimate goal of such accounts anyway. The platform is also bringing back comment downvotes (a thumbs down), which might help them flag spam comments more frequently. Still, some worry this might simply flag regular users who post comments others don’t like, or even just general sentiments they don’t like.

It’s unclear how helpful this will be with the rise of AI, but for brands that monetize content on Facebook, it’s important to remember to keep all interactions genuine and thoughtful.

Pinterest Adds New Badge To Show Off Marketing Skills

Pinterest users can earn a new badge through the Pinterest Academy education platform, which offers a range of courses to help users improve their knowledge of how the platform works and, ideally, maximize their Pin ad results.

The courses offer step-by-step learning with a quiz to prove your knowledge at the end, upon which marketers can earn a series of badges, including the latest Performance Essentials skill badge.
