Sears Holdings to Close 78 Stores

The company will close 68 Kmart stores and 10 Sears stores this summer

Sears Holdings, which operates Sears Roebuck and Co. and Kmart Corp., will close 76 stores in late July and two in mid-September.

The stores that will close include 68 Kmart stores and 10 Sears stores.

“The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take aggressive actions to strengthen our company, fund our transformation, and restore Sears Holdings to profitability,” said Edward Lampert, chairman and chief executive officer of Sears Holdings. “We’re focusing on our best members, our best categories, and our best stores as we work to accelerate our transformation.”

The stores will begin liquidation sales on May 12 for Kmart and April 29 for Sears.
