Let’s Celebrate Sapphire, Birthstone of September, Again

It’s September again, a month that I long for all year and welcome with anticipation and excitement, even this year—especially this year.

September is never what you want it to be. The calendar says September 1 and we grab for our sweaters only to sweat in the 90-degree heat—it’s like we never learn. But it’s this consistent performance we make year after year that cultivates a sense of anticipation and hope for a better future (in September’s case, it’s a hope for cooler weather and changing leaves), which can be applied to what we’re collectively living now—hang in there, we’ll get there.

While the autumn revelers among us brew their pumpkin-flavored coffees and plan their Halloween costumes (or insert whatever fall activity makes you happiest here), jewelry lovers and those born during the month of September are also relishing in the gemstone of the month: sapphire.

Our annual celebration of sapphire is as predictable as the lighting of a pumpkin-scented candle on September 1: You can count on the fact that it will happen, every year, never fail. While I have nothing but repetition in words (a gemstone as glorious as sapphire warrants unchanging praise, after all), the good news is that there are always new creations that keep this annual celebration feeling familiar but never monotonous.

Though sapphires come in all colors of the rainbow—and rainbow jewelry is a hot category worthy of its demand—there’s just something beyond special about the deep blue glow of a classic sapphire. It really never tires, never fades, never ceases to inspire a racing heart and an even faster withdrawal from the bank account. It’s romantic, it’s mysterious, it’s everlasting and filled with wonder. Yes, friends, it’s a favorite time of year for many, and for many reasons. That it is the month of sapphire is one of the best of them.
