Responsible Jewellery Council Joins UN Global Compact Platform

Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) has joined the UN Global Compact SDG Ambition platform, which aims to help accelerate adoption of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

As a member of SDG Ambition, RJC will try to get its 1,400 member companies to prioritize and deepen their commitment to the UN’s development and sustainability agenda.

The Responsible Jewellery Council has been a participant in the U.N. Global Compact since 2009. The Global Compact’s 10 principles spanning human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption are integrated into the RJC’s Code of Practices.

As a result of joining the platform, the RJC is forming a task force to coordinate industry efforts to measure and report SDG impact, build a library of best practices, and organize events to educate members on the various SDGs.

Iris Van der Veken, RJC executive director (pictured), said in a statement that the group was upping its ambition, from “do no harm” to “do good.”

“This partnership reflects our long-held vision of inclusion and transparency,” she said. “We will work closely with the Global Compact and all our stakeholders to drive global action on the SDGs. I consider that our moral responsibility.”
