Richard Hughes to Receive Bonanno Award

The Accredited Gemologists Association has awarded Richard W. Hughes the 2010 Antonio C. Bonanno Award for Excellence in Gemology.

The award, named in honor of AGA’s founding father, recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the gemological field and includes a check for $2,000. Hughes, the senior vice president of gemstone acquisition and marketing at NCS Group, Bangkok, Thailand, was recognized for his efforts to advance the profile of many gems and the countries that produce them, as well as his scientific writings.

Hughes has authored two books and more than 100 articles on all aspects of gemology and the gem and jewelry trades. His Ruby & Sapphire is considered the standard work on the subject, and his articles on undisclosed gemstone treatments are especially well-regarded.

The Bonanno Award will be presented Feb. 3, 2010, at AGA’s Gala Dinner Dance at the conclusion of its Tucson, Ariz., conference. For information, visit www.accreditedgemologists.org or call 619 501-5444.
