Remembering Zsa Zsa Gabor, Who Never Hated a Man Enough to Give His Diamonds Back

Women’s love of diamonds prove they are superior to men, she once said

The industry is mourning Zsa Zsa Gabor, the Hungarian socialite who left a string of memorable quotes about her love of diamonds.

The onetime tabloid fixture, whose parents owned a jewelry and porcelain business, reportedly died of a heart attack Dec. 18 at age 99, after spending the prior five years on life support.

Gabor, while an occasional actress and former Miss Hungary, is now looked at as a progenitor of the Kardashian-style celebrity who is “famous for being famous.” While she appeared in occasional TV and movie roles—including portraying a villain on Batman—she was perhaps most known for a 1989 incident where she slapped a police officer.

Her most famous diamond-related quip was, “I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back.” Since Gabor was married nine times, that is a lot of diamonds not to return.  As with other notable quotes attributed to diamond-loving celebrities, it’s difficult to track down the exact source of that remark, though The Guardian said it dates back to 1957.

But several of the purported witticisms attributed to Gabor involved diamonds:

– “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and dogs are a man’s best friend. Now you know which sex has more sense.”

– “I love to put on diamonds and beautiful evening gowns and make my girlfriends upset. It’s a wonderful feeling.

– When someone complimented her 20 ct. ring, Gabor retorted, “Oh, dahling, these are just my working diamonds.

In 2014, an important Harry Winston diamond rivière necklace once owned by Gabor was auctioned by Christie’s. It failed to sell.

Gabor is survived by her husband Prince Frédéric von Anhalt.
