Reflections of the Reef: Branch Coral Jewelry Designs

The branch coral design motif is popular once again this season. The May 2013 issue of House Beautiful magazine observes: “There are almost as many beautiful coral patterns as there are fish in the sea. Realistic or imagined, this natural motif is a decorating classic.”  What is true of two-dimensional designs in fabrics is equally true of three-dimensional representations of branch coral seen in jewelry.

Ocean motifs are recommended as a “trend worth trying” in the May 2013 issue of Real Simple. Pictured is a necklace of glass and gold plate from C. Wonder and a gold-tone bracelet with shell accent from Charles Albert.

The March 2013 issue of Elle reports: “Abstract prints, nautical colors, and a cacophony of coral take beachy motifs to new heights.” Featured are a coral-motif bracelet of yellow gold with sapphire, garnet, and diamond detail from Lydia Courteille, and a coral resin necklace from Kara by Kara Ross. The model wears gold and glass-bead bracelets from Iwona Ludyga Design and a glass-bead bracelet from Anthony Dryer for Pearl Collective, plus a double-finger brass ring form Jennifer Fisher.

Actress Naomi Watts is pictured in the March 2013 issue of InStyle wearing Repossi gem reef earrings in pink gold and diamonds with a black Tom Ford dress.

The April 2013 issue of Town & Country adds coral motif earrings from House of Lavande to a fashion spread highlighting floral designs. The earrings are accompanied by necklaces from Chanel and Gillian Horsup, a Tom Binns bracelet, and an Oscar de la Renta necklace worn as a belt. The model on the right wears an Assad Mounser necklace, Iosselliani bracelet, and Cartier watch.

The February 2013 issue of Lucky adds a coral motif necklace in resin from Dinosaur Designs to a striped dress from 10 Crosby Derek Lam. Also pictured are resin bangles from Dinosaur Designs, a powder-coated ring from Alexis Bittar, and a Kate Spade New York wristwatch.

A Stephen Dweck cuff set with what appears to be coral is one of the items featured in a spread on pastel boho looks in the May 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. Also pictured is a tassel necklace from Eddie Borgo.

The June 2013 issue of InStyle spotlights a “Bamboo coral and gold-plated necklace” from Arthur and Livingston, along with a pair of crystal and nylon cord bracelets from A.V. Max and a glass, metal and polyester cord bracelet from Lydell NYC.

An inexpensive Mother’s Day gift suggestion in the May 2013 issue of Woman’s Day is the “Coral Fiji Necklace” made of coral-colored beads from fredflare.com.

One of the most intriguing branch coral designs is this bridal tiara worn by Marta Ferri at her wedding to Carlo Borromeo in Pantelleria, Italy, as pictured in the Spring/Summer 2013 issue of Town & Country Weddings.
