Record-Breaking Hatton Garden Robbery Was Committed by 70-Year-Olds, Police Say

Police have nabbed seven suspects—two of whom are in their 70s—in conjunction with the early-April burglary of more than 50 safety deposit boxes in London’s Hatton Garden jewelry district, which potentially ranks as the biggest jewelry theft in history.

Earlier today, London police nabbed seven alleged burglars after raids at 12 addresses in north London and Kent, England. The suspects, who may have taken as much as $300 million in jewels, all have surprisingly advanced ages: The youngest is 48, while others are 67, 74, and 76.

According to a police statement, detectives retrieved some large bags containing high-value property at one address, which they believe was taken in the burglary.

The statement offers little information of how the suspected were collared, or any indications as to their background or motive. It cautions this is a “fast-paced, ever-expanding investigation.”

It also offers something of a mea culpa for not responding to an initial alarm at the building. The burglars were reportedly in the building at the time.

“Our normal procedures would have resulted in police attending the scene, and we apologize that this did not happen,” the statement said. “We are working closely with the alarm industry to improve the call handling and response processes at both ends to ensure nothing like this happens again.”
