Van Cleef and Cartier Are The RealReal’s Top Resale Jewelry Brands

Pre-owned luxury retailer The RealReal recently released its annual Holiday Resale Report, which details the brands that best held their original retail value (and therefore may be the best investments) on the site over the previous year.

In jewelry, Van Cleef & Arpels held its value better than any other brand—for the second year in a row. Pieces from the the maison’s Alhambra collection were most popular; on average, they retailed for 74 percent of their original price.

Following Van Cleef is Cartier’s Juste un Clou bracelet (the iconic wrapped nail design), which also resaled, on average, for 74 percent of its original price. Relative newcomer Anita Ko comes in third on the site in jewelry. The designer’s diamond-studded pieces retailed for 69 percent of their original price, on average.

Jewelry brands that experienced a decline in resale value this year include Chopard (its value is down 12 percent year-over-year), Judith Ripka (down 4 percent), and Cathy Waterman (down 4 percent).

Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Panerai, in that order, top the list of best resale value in watches. Though the retailer doesn’t reveal how well Rolex and Patek Philippe maintained their resale value on the site in 2018, it does report that the secondhand value of Rolex is up 14 percent, while that of Patek Philippe experienced an 8 percent rise.

The resale value of Panerai timepieces is up 11 percent, and models on average sell for 60 percent of their original price on the site.

Ebel, Chanel, and Raymond Weil all experienced a dip: Ebel’s value was down 17 percent year-over-year; Chanel was down 16 percent; and Raymond Weil saw a 7 percent decline.

The fashion brands that enjoyed a surge in their resale value this year are, in order, Hermès, Goyard, and Moncler. Conversely, Tory Burch, Tom Ford, and Miu Miu saw declines.

In men’s fashion, pricey coat label Canada Goose, luggage brand Rimowa, and trendy fashion label Off-White topped the list (in that order) for brands that best held their value—while the value of Kenzo, Chrome Hearts, and Dior Homme products on the site eroded.

The women’s handbags with the best resale value in 2018 are, in order, Hermès’ Constance, Gucci’s GG Marmont, and Louis Vuitton’s Empreinte Pochette Metis (which resales for a stunning 95 percent of its original value).

The annual list is informative for retailers who deal in pre-owned jewelry, watches, and fashion, because it hints at shifts in consumer loyalties when it comes to brands and designs.
