Photo Shoot Aftermath: The Skinny on What Arrived, What Didn’t, and What Was Shot for the Best in Show Issue

The original photography that JCK invests in each month is a huge production, and the Best in Show July–August issue we shot yesterday was no exception. Jewelry—in this case, new pieces spied during the shows in Las Vegas two weeks ago—is selected by me and Brooke Magnaghi, our stylist, who also selects the model’s clothing. We go into the shoot with ideas about what pieces should be used, and we often don’t end up shooting all of the pieces we pull.

We did not use a gorgeous triangular shape bicolor tanzanite necklace from Vivaan, which pulled the piece out of a store for us just for this shoot, nor did we use either of two massive Starfish cuffs from MCL. We did, however, shoot a Tahitian pearl body chain made by Vibes and several new pieces from Le Vian, including a $1 million diamond and tanzanite cabochon necklace. We used several trendy sterling and diamond earrings from World Trade Jewelers as accent pieces for many of our setups. And we also were able to shoot a masterfully made snake bracelet from notoriously press-shy Cicada. Brooke and I both would have loved to use a Stinger gold and diamond v-silhouette necklace from Queen Vee, a new exhibitor in the Design Center at JCK Las Vegas 2014, but the package never arrived (FedEx delivered it this morning to our Manhattan office instead of yesterday, as scheduled, to our photography studio!).

And next month’s pearl shoot for the September issue is another opportunity to give more exposure to worthy firms, and to try to help JCK’s retail-jeweler readers source new and exciting product for their stores’ cases.
