Pendants, the Long Version

Huge pendants on short, chunky chains are very much on trend this season, as we previously saw. Their longer counterparts are very much in style as well. The pendants worn on longer chains tend to be medium to large in size, and are usually but not always smaller than those seen on the shorter chains.

A review of fashion editorial reflects that long pendant necklaces are particularly favored worn over prints, sometimes in daring juxtaposition of designs:

The September issue of Harper’s Bazaar features this dramatic look of a waist-length filigree pendant necklace from John Hardy worn with an elaborate pleated print gown and sandals from Emilio Pucci.

Actress Cody Horn sports a bare-midriff look of patterned wool and cashmere from Sonia Rykiel with a Philip Crangi 24k gold and stainless steel necklace in this photo from the September issue of InStyle. The lambskin shearling coat is from Joseph; the vintage leather belt is from Melet Mercantile.

A gold-plated long pendant necklace almost gets lost in the folds of an oversize argyle print trapeze sweater in November’s Lucky. The necklace is from MelindaMaria.com. The model also wears a Michael Kors wristwatch.

The August 2012 issue of Real Simple highlights a Danielle Stevens necklace of resin, glass, and gold plate, noting: “It looks luxe, but this faux-tortoiseshell pendant squares with your budget. The necklace is shown with a parrot print top from H&M.

The September issue of Elle adds a long pendant as a distraction to the lengthy stripes of a full-length Akris dress. The sterling silver pendant whistle necklace is from Tiffany & Co.

A current ad for Kate Spade New York puts a round pendant with a detailed center on a polka-dotted shirt, worn with other polka-dotted accessories.

There are exceptions to the long-pendant-over-print look:

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow wears a vintage Fred Leighton amethyst, 18k white gold, and 18k rose gold necklace with a black silk chiffon dress and cape from Valentino Haute Couture in this photo from the October issue of InStyle.

In September’s Real Simple, a long hammered-metal pendant necklace form Chloe + Isabel is shown with a solid top from Banana Republic, pants from H&M, and shoes from Chinese Laundry. The look is further accented with a gold- and silver-plated charm bracelet from Lauren by Ralph Lauren.

A current ad for Moschino includes a large polka-dotted heart pendant on an elaborate chain reaching to the model’s waist worn with a black ensemble.

A current ad for Dolce & Gabbana features a long necklace adorned with small purses acting as pendants. The background is black, accented with lace collar and sleeves.

Because both short and long versions of pendant necklaces are on trend, one beautiful detachable large-sized pendant can be the centerpiece of two very different length chains—providing chic versatility to a wardrobe.
