Pearls: Spring 2013 Update

The May 2013 issue of Elle reports that “minimalism gets an of-the-moment makeover as gold and silver accents dress up pristine white shoes, bags, and baubles.” The one jewel featured is an elaborate resin pearl necklace from Dior. Pearls are very much back on the fashion radar this season.

Although jewelry containing faux pearls from some of the design houses is receiving fashion editorial notice, the genuine item is also being featured. The May 2013 issue of InStyle provides advice on options for freshwater and cultured pearl earrings at different price levels and encourages readers to consider the factors luster, shape, size and surface. The earrings pictured are from Honora, Mary Louise Designs, Tiffany & Co., Elyria Jewels, and Mikimoto.

At the upper end of the scale, record-setting prices for natural pearls are spotlighted in the April 2013 issue of Town & Country. Most of the genuine pearls featured in fashion spreads are cultured pearls, of course.

In the May 2013 issue of Glamour, actress Brit Marling wears a skirt suit ensemble and block-heel shoes from Louis Vuitton with a heart charm-accented pearl bracelet from Tiffany & Co.

The May 2013 issue of Vogue scripts a make-believe romance between actor Tom Hiddleston and model Cara Delevingne. Here Delevingne wears a pearl necklace from Camilla Dietz Bergeron Ltd. and pearl earrings (likely resin pearls) from Dior with a Jil Sander cardigan.

In a fashion spread riffing off Alfred Hitchcock’s film Rear Window, with actor Tobey Maguire and model/television personality Carolyn Murphy serving as models, the April 2013 issue of Vogue features a number of retro-inspired looks, including this Marc Jacobs dress accented with pearl button earrings from House of Lavande.

Murphy wears a triple-strand pearl necklace from House of Lavande with a Gucci dress in this photo from the April 2013 Vogue fashion spread. The gloves are from Carolina Amato; the handbag is from Prada.

Lest all the classic pearl strands and button earrings be too staid for its readers, Vogue, in its April 2013 issue, bifurcates its coverage of pearls with a page devoted to nontraditional looks, “Not Your Mother’s Pearls.” The singer Rihanna is pictured in a vintage Chanel pearl choker and sunglasses, and a Chanel necklace and headband are also pictured.

The release of the new film The Great Gatsby is bound to stoke the fire of interest in pearls. The cover of the May 2013 issue of Vogue features actress Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, wearing a pair of diamond and pearl hand ornaments from The Great Gatsby Collection by Tiffany & Co. She wears a diamond necklace and earrings from Tiffany & Co. Her dress is from Oscar de la Renta and the headpiece was created by Julien d’Ys.

This image from the May 2013 issue of Vogue pictures Mulligan in head-to-toe pearls. She wears a dress of ostrich feathers with chiffon-covered pearls from Alexander McQueen along with pearl and diamond earrings from Tiffany & Co. Her diamond ring is a 19th-century design from De Vera. She carries a sterling silver mesh bag with diamond from Fred Leighton and wears bejeweled Miu Miu heels.

If there’s a picture bound to stoke readers’ appetite for pearls, it’s this photo from the March 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, which displays pearl jewelry in oyster shells. Featured are a Cartier wristwatch, David Webb ring, Harry Winston earrings, David Yurman ring, Van Cleef & Arpels coral motif clip, and Harry Winston ring.

I’ll have what she’s having.
