I was adding a few things to my cart at an online fashion retailer a few weeks ago when I felt a surge of excitement: a big, chunky bead necklace in the most perfect sunset shade of red. But it had to be back-ordered—proof of its popularity (or perhaps distribution issues)—and would take longer to arrive than I was willing to wait.
I was pretty disappointed to cancel. As it turns out, though, I didn’t have to worry about finding another necklace like that. There are plenty of oversize bead necklaces—and better ones, at that.
A great-looking fashion piece is more in this woman’s budget, but the fine and demi-fine jewelry worlds are also rich with options. When it comes to this currently surging style, the industry has us spoiled for choice.
Designers have been quick to answer the renewed call for maximalism, and oversize beads are shaping up to be one of the season’s most significant jewelry trends. These pieces don’t just complete an outfit—they anchor it, acting as a true focal point rather than an afterthought.
The look spans a wide range of materials, from sterling silver and gold-plated styles (as well as some solid gold versions, for the 1%) to carved opaque gemstones, resin, and even wood. And, of course, a strand of oversize pearls is always a welcome iteration.
Shapes vary from flatter, more cylindrical beads to softly rounded ovals, though it’s the bold, perfectly spherical styles that make the strongest statement. Lengths run the gamut as well, but the shorter, neck-grazing silhouettes feel especially modern right now. Prices follow suit, ranging from accessible to investment-worthy.
If there’s one piece to spotlight this spring and summer—one that instantly updates a jewelry wardrobe with minimal effort—it’s the oversize bead necklace. Here, some of the latest.
