Omega is pushing the boundaries of the luxury dress watch category by proving that “precision” isn’t just for chronographs. Its new Constellation Observatory, released a few days ago, is the first timepiece without a seconds hand to earn Master Chronometer certification from METAS, the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology.
For practical purposes, METAS’ stamp of approval has typically required the presence of a seconds hand. The certification process involves measuring daily deviation—only 0 to +5 seconds is allowed—and verifying that level of granularity without a seconds hand had been essentially impossible.
“Until now, precision certification has required a seconds hand,” said Raynald Aeschlimann, president and CEO of Omega, in a statement. “The development of a new acoustic testing methodology has made that requirement obsolete. It is this breakthrough that has enabled us to present the Constellation Observatory, the first two-hand watch to achieve Master Chronometer certification.”
To attain this level of precision on the Constellation Observatory, Omega’s recently established Laboratoire de Précision used high-frequency optical sensors and internal measurement systems to track the rate of the calibre 8910 directly from the balance wheel’s oscillations. This allowed the movement to be fully vetted for magnetic resistance (up to 15,000 gauss), power reserve, and chronometric performance without a traditional visual indicator.
The new watch’s technical achievement suggests that Omega is leaning into “invisible luxury,” the idea that the watch’s most impressive features are hidden from immediate observation. This provides a fresh narrative for the brand: a sleek, minimalist dress watch that carries the same rigorous, independent verification as a professional diver’s tool. Pricing starts at $10,900 and goes up to $59,100, for the Moonshine™ gold model.
