First Look: New Men’s Jewelry From John Varvatos x Gurhan

If you’re looking to add a men’s jewelry line to your collection, the spring 2019 collection coming out from menswear designer John Varvatos is worth considering for two reasons. Number one: It bears the name of a major name in men’s fashion. The second very good reason is that the line is produced by Gurhan, right in the well-known jewelry brand’s workshop in Istanbul, where it is also personally overseen by founder/master jeweler Gurhan Orhan himself.

Dog tag necklace, $498; bracelet stack, $498–$1,198 each; and skull ring, $298

These two facts may be all some customers need to know: In effect, the tough-luxe cuffs, cufflinks, dog tag necklaces, signet rings, and other pieces offer cool factor and cachet backed up by high-quality craftsmanship. And there’s the credibility that comes with one fine jewelry brand’s long-standing reputation for hand-hewn textures and expert layering of silver with 24k gold, whether it’s a streamlined stacking ring or a fluid triple-hoop earring.

In other words, though Gurhan is technically the licensee, this isn’t a situation where a fashion label is trading on name recognition and everything gets sort of watered down.

The John Varvatos capsule launched last fall, the result of a design collaboration that developed naturally between Varvatos and Gurhan after they met a year and a half ago. The two quickly discovered that their aesthetics and life philosophies were simpatico. They also found that they shared a strong interest in artisanal craftsmanship, not to mention a deep a love of rock music and the style associated with it.
