New competitive categories for American Vision Awards

Several new award categories will debut for the 2005 American Vision Awards (AVAs), the annual design competition sponsored by Manufacturing Jewelers & Suppliers of America (MJSA).

The new categories for 2005 are Silver Distinction, sponsored by the Silver Users Association; Mokumé-gane Distinction, sponsored by Reactive Metals Studio; and Shining Wave Metals; Reactive Metals Distinction, sponsored by Reactive Metals Studio, Cabot Supermetals, and Titanium Products Design, Inc.; and CAD/CAM Distinction, sponsored by Model Master.

Other Distinction categories, in addition to the overall Professional and Student awards, are Platinum Distinction, sponsored by Platinum Guild International, and Crystal Distinction, sponsored by Swarovski North America.

Winners will receive $1,000 for first-place and $500 for second-place in the professional category, and $250 for first-place and $100 for second-place in the student category. Each first-place winner in a Distinction category receives $500, while the runner-up receives $250. In addition, the first-place winner for CAD/CAM Distinction will win the Model Master CNC 1000 Milling Machine, valued at $15,500, courtesy of Model Master.

The winning designs will be placed on display at the 2005 MJSA Expo New York, March 6-8, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. MJSA also actively promotes AVA Design Competition winners through news releases, newsletters, AJM Magazine, and the association Web site at www.mjsainc.com.

Entries must be received by Jan. 7, 2005. Eligible contestants must be independent jewelry designers, company-employed jewelry designers, or students enrolled in an art or design-related program at a college or university. Pieces will be judged on originality, creativity, presentation quality, effective use of materials, wearability, and the design’s perceived manufacturing and marketing potential. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges, consisting of industry professionals chosen by MJSA.
