Neon’s Insistent Glow: Hot Hues in Jewelry

Neon colors are attention-getting, no doubt. Summer is the ideal season to sample the hues, as neon speaks of carefree holidays and fun in the sun. A surprising number of designers have incorporated neon colors into jewelry.

The July–August 2012 issue of More embraces neon as one of summer’s “top 4 age-appropriate trends”—the age referenced being over 40. The jewelry pictured consists of a neon yellow resin and gold-plated necklace from Kate Spade New York and a neon leather and metal cuff from C. Wonder.

The July 2012 issue of Better Homes and Gardens features Jill Martin of the Today show wearing a neon-hued “geometric faceted-gem bib necklace” from ShoeDazzle and a quilted color stretch bangle bracelet from Adorn by Wendy Williams for QVC. Her earrings and gold bracelets are her own. The blouse is from ShopSosie and the skirt is from CelebBoutique.

Harper’s Bazaar looks to “neon neckwear” as an “impact investment,” in the June–July 2012 issue, noting: “Statement jewelry in bold highlighter hues elevates otherwise simple outfits to new levels of summertime chic.” The necklace pictured is from Auden.

The June 2012 issue of Elle jazzes up sporty fashions with all manner of bright hues. Here the model is pictured wearing a neon necklace from Alexis Bittar along with long drop enamel earrings from Bottega Veneta with a Chanel swimsuit and silk jacket from Reed Krakoff.

In the above photo also from the June issue of Elle, the model wears neon rings from Alexis Bittar and a neon-hued leather bracelet from CC Skye with a top and skirt from Blumarine, nylon jacket from Moncier, and visor from Rike Feurstein.

The May 2012 issue of Real Simple announces: “Neon is back (but this time skip the hair spray and the spandex),” providing 29 examples, each under $100. Among the choices is an acrylic necklace of multiple neon hues from Adia Kibur. The model also wears a layered gold-plated bangle from R.J. Graziano with her Vintage Havana tank, American Apparel skirt, and Guess wedges.

In the above photo also from the May issue of Real Simple, the model wears neon rubber and silver-plated pewter stacked bracelets from Ben-Amun plus vivid Lucite and brass chandelier earrings from Fantasy Jewelry Box. She also wears a blush-tone acrylic ring from Sequin. Her dress is from H&M, worn with an Ann Taylor neon leather belt and Nine West neon-accented heels.

InStyle magazine advises its readers in April 2012, “You Can Do Neon.” Fashion Director Cindy Weber Cleary explained why she loves the look, in part due to the many cool associations with neon: “Andy Warhol’s ’60s portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Debbie Harry’s embrace of Sprouse’s designs, Keith Haring’s bold art, and the whole So-Cal surf culture captured by Body Glove.” The one item of jewelry pictured on the above page is a necklace of acrylic and neon-hued cord from the Limited.

In choosing items within her designated $100 monthly fashion budget for April 2012, InStyle magazine market editor Dana Avidan-Cohn selected a neon-hued glass and metal necklace from Ann Taylor, writing: “Neon jewelry is one of my spring musts.”

The April 2012 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal urged readers: “Stack your bracelets and pile on the rings! Loading up on accessories is spring’s freshest trend.” Pictured are a pair of visually stacked necklaces from Ann Taylor, one in neon green, one in bright pink.

Also in the April issue of Ladies’ Home Journal is this photo of stacked bangles with the caption “for a totally electrifying look, grab a bright, bold, neon bangle.” The medium and large bangles are from Ted Rossi; the skinny bangles are from Ben-Amun.

Neon appears in jewelry incorporating a variety of materials, including resin, leather, rubber, acrylic, Lucite, and glass. Whether to add a touch of neon or to load up on mixed or matching hot hues is the question.
