Nailing the Look With Bolts & Screws

The workbench is inspiring jewelry design this season, led by traditional and just-introduced jewelry designs from Cartier. Designer Aldo Cipullo conceptualized and created the screw-studded Love bracelet for Cartier back in the 1970s, a design that has achieved iconic status over the decades. Cartier describes the bracelet as “the symbol of genuine loving attachment, a discreet token of passionate love. Your loved one will lock it firmly onto your wrist with the aid of a golden screwdriver of which he will remain the guardian.”

Cipullo is profiled in the May 2012 issue of Town & Country, which announces the launch of Cartier’s new Juste un Clou collection, which translates as “Just a Nail.” Also highlighted are Ralph Lauren chronograph wristwatches, passementerie cuffs from Anna e Alex, and cocktail rings from Pomellato’s Pom Pom collection, as well as other Cipullo designs.

Pieces from the Juste un Clou collection are popular not only with celebrities but also in the fashion press. For example, a white gold and diamond bracelet from the collection is the style director’s choice in the August 2012 issue of Elle along with a carved-rock ring from Eddie Borgo. Pink gold and diamond earrings from Repossi are the selection of the magazine’s market director.

Other designers have their own take on this theme. The August 2012 issue of Elle includes a feature entitled “Hard Wear”: “Bolt and screw details put an industrial spin on this season’s chunky cuffs.” Pictured are a gold, silver, and sapphire bracelet, circa 1940 from Siegelson; a metal bracelet from Eddie Borgo; a gold vermeil, gunmetal, and silver bracelet from Reed Krakoff; and an antique silver bracelet from Bottega Veneta.

The August issue of Elle is otherwise peppered with examples of this trend favored by the magazine’s editorial staff. A hammered gold bent nail ring from David Webb is featured above, the choice of the magazine’s accessories director, along with a Moka resin and metal bracelet from Lanvin. The fashion news director favors a pair of gold-plated disk earrings from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.

Also featured in the August 2012 issue of Elle is a nail-studded brass cuff from A.L.C.

A simpler brass screw necklace from A.L.C. is selected for the September 2012 issue of Elle as an accessory appropriate to minimalist styles for the fall and winter. Also pictured is a pavé coil bracelet from Eddie Borgo.

One of the pairs of double cuffs featured in the July 2012 issue of InStyle is this pair of triple-row screw cuffs in brass from Jennifer Fisher.

The September 2012 issue of InStyle accents an embellished ensemble from Prada with a Mawi Swarovski crystal and hematite-plated necklace in a sunray tube design. The model is also styled with a Swarovski palladium plate and crystal ring, and a Basile & Pape Bespoke Jewelry sterling silver ring with metalloid rock.

In unintentional irony, actress Kristen Stewart is quoted in the September 2012 issue of InStyle stating that her go-to accessory is the Cartier 18kt white gold Juste un Clou bracelet: “I’m really into the solid, substantial weight of Cartier’s Juste un Clou bracelet. It reminds me of the person who gave it to me.” I’ll resist supplying a pun-accented comment.
