Megawatt Diamond Earrings Steal the Jewelry Spotlight at the 2016 Oscars

Huge diamond-earring stunners reigned in popularity last night on the red carpet

While E!’s reporter Ryan Seacrest still (bizarrely) refuses to inquire about celebs’ jewelry selections during red carpet interviews, Oscars viewers could at least take solace in what they saw Sunday night at the 88th annual Academy Awards: big earrings, big diamonds, and the occasional eye-popping choker.

The bevy of big earrings on lobes last night reinforced the trend spied at the Emmys while also giving viewers a large new crew of styles to ogle. ABC’s Lara Spencer wore lovely chandeliers with diamonds and rose-cut emeralds from Fred Leighton, while fellow preshow reporter Robin Roberts wore drops from David Yurman. Big stunners were evident on E!’s Giuliana Rancic, who wore colorless diamond door knockers from Forevermark in 18k white and yellow gold; presenter Kerry Washington wore vintage hoops in platinum with colorless diamonds from Harry Winston; Cate Blanchett (a Best Actress nominee for Carol) wore platinum drop earrings with colorless diamonds from Tiffany & Co. Presenter Priyanka Chopra wore 50 cts. of diamond drops set in platinum by Lorraine Schwartz, and Lady Gaga, who performed the Oscar-nominated song “Til It Happens to You,” wore window-size colorless emerald-cut diamond drop earrings also in platinum from Schwartz. And the list continues: Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara wore diamond and sapphire drops from Lorraine Schwartz, Julianne Moore wore colorless diamond loops from Chopard, and Best Supporting Actress nominee Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) wore chandeliers with colorless diamonds from Nirav Modi. The most interesting earrings of the night may have been the mismatched Chopard drops worn by Brooklyn’s Saiorse Ronan, also a Best Actress nominee. (And to all the personalities who questioned their unmatched appearance, yes, they are a “thing.”)

Some smaller diamond numbers à la subtle climbers and short drops were evident, too. Reese Witherspoon wore platinum earrings with colorless pear- and marquise-shape diamonds from Tiffany & Co., Charlize Theron donned platinum cluster earrings from Harry Winston, Jennifer Garner was in Swirl drop platinum earrings with diamonds and emeralds from Neil Lane, and presenter Olivia Wilde wore Neil Lane earrings in a half-moon-shape in platinum with diamonds and pearls. Presenter and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley arrived in colorless diamond earrings from Chanel, and Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner wore diamond-accented drops from Tiffany & Co.

There were a few standouts in the necklace arena as well. Naomi Watts wore a gorgeous colorless diamond bib from Bulgari, while presenter Tina Fey wore a diamond and sapphire collar from the same maker, and Miss Universe Olivia Culpo wore a diamond and gemstone piece from Pasquale Bruni. Olivia Wilde also wore an Edwardian pearl choker from Neil Lane.

For the jewelry Twitterverse, however, the most exciting moment of the red carpet was when Whoopi Goldberg appeared wearing a sprawling one-of-a-kind gold, diamond, and pearl octopus hand piece from Turkish jeweler Sevan Bicakci. All the tweeters enjoyed seeing a little-known jewelry rock star get a well-deserved plug.
