MBFW: It’s On (Right Now!)

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week started yesterday in New York
City, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and style icon Diane Von Furstenberg,
addressing the press in midtown. Some 116 individual shows, including ones from
Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, and DKNY, take place in the event’s new home in
Lincoln Center, as well as some off-sites venues, including some streaming live
online. [For a schedule of shows, click here.]

The jewelry industry is poised for participation in several
ways: Fashion’s Night Out, dressing some of the talent (as Ritani is doing for
AOL’s online Fashion Week host), and, through a small jewelry exhibit during
the MBFW venue itself. QVC is featuring a pop-up shop with a range of its
popular products, including jewelry, whil the Couture show has partnered with
MBFW and IMG, the affair’s producers, to establish the Couture Fine Jewelry
Exhibition
, which will be in the main lobby of the Lincoln Center from
September 9 – 16. The goal of the latter: to “help help editors, stylists and
retailers better connect better connect the two industries in their editorials
and merchandising assortments,” show officials stated in a release. Participating
vendors are Scott Kay, Gurhan, Paul Morelli, Yossi Harari, Andrea Fohrman,
Sally Sohn, and Bavna.

Fiona Tilley, president of Gurhan, told the press that “Gurhan
has always been at the intersection of fashion and fine jewelry that defines a
wardrobe rather than just accessorizes it.”

“New
York Fashion Week is one of the premiere fashion events in the world and, since
fashion and fine jewelry go hand-in-hand, it’s only natural that jewelry
companies should have a presence,” said Carrie Soucy, president of Miamore
Communications, a public relations agency that specializes in jewelry and
luxury goods. “Our client Ritani, for example, is dressing TV personality
Ceslie Armstrong for her daily online video reports for AOL. Style-conscious
women everywhere will be turning to the Web and traditional media to see
coverage of the runway shows and events and, given that AOL has more than 14
million viewers, this provides a fabulous opportunity for Ritani to reach not
only a large audience, but–more importantly–a targeted one.”

New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed the press
on the opening day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Style icon Diane Von Furstenberg welcomed another edition of
MBFW, a look at spring 2011 collections.
