Marla Aaron’s niche isn’t message jewelry, but the jewelry designer’s new Rebus cuff ventures into that sentimental territory. The New York City–based artist behind Marla Aaron Jewelry has created a 14k gold cuff featuring a heart-shape ruby, and upon purchase, the birthstones of the buyer’s family will be set into the piece.
The Rebus piece is “like a wordless poem,” Aaron tells JCK. (Merriam-Webster, meanwhile, maintains that a rebus is a poem where certain words are replaced with pictures; see simple example here.) Instead of photos, words are replaced with gemstones surrounding the heart.
“The person can choose what else they want to represent through a series of stones, whether it be birthdays of loved ones with birthstones or simply conjuring up a specific memory with a specific stone,” continues Aaron. “Wearing it is like the best metal hug you can imagine.”
The bracelet will retail for about $12,000, depending on stones chosen.
