Macy’s to Open at 5 P.M. on Thanksgiving

By opening an hour earlier than last year, the department store bucks the recent trend

Bucking the recent trend, Macy’s will throw open its doors on 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, reports say.

BestBlackFriday.com says sources at five shopping centers confirmed the new, earlier opening. The news was also reported by the Associated Press.

The dinnertime opening is an hour earlier than the department store opened last year.

The blog notes this goes counter to the recent trend. The largest shopping center in the United States, the Mall of America, has announced it will close on Thanksgiving. So has jeweler Rogers & Hollands.

“The public backlash surrounding Thanksgiving openings has been growing every single year, and fatigue appears to be setting in for both retail employees and shoppers,” the blog writes. “Sales have stalled, and it may not be worth the hassle for many stores to drag their employees into work anymore.”

The company did not return a request for comment.
