Macy’s Shakes Up Its Executive Ranks

Share

Macy’s has shaken up its C suite, saying goodbye to its chief operations officer, as well as the cofounder of beauty brand Bluemercury.

Chief operations officer John Harper, a 35-year veteran of the department store and its Macy’s division, will leave the company on Aug. 1. He has served as its COO since 2020, according to LinkedIn, and before that served as its chief stores officer.

Following his departure, the COO role will be eliminated, and chief stores officer Marc Mastronardi and chief supply chain officer Dennis Mullahy will report to chairman and CEO Jeff Gennette.

In addition, Laura Miller has been appointed the retailer’s chief information officer, effective March 15. Miller most recently served as chief information officer of InterContinental Hotel Group. She succeeds chief technology officer Naveen Krishna, who is leaving the company.

In a statement, Gennette said that Miller was brought on board “to improve the full omni shopping experience and modernize our platforms.”

Marla Beck, the cofounder and CEO of Bluemercury, will leave the company this summer. Macy’s bought the beauty and spa brand for $210 million in 2015. It was originally reported that Beck would leave last February, but she later told Retail Dive she had decided to stay because of her “connection to the brand.” A couple of months later, WWD reported that Macy’s wanted to sell Bluemercury.

The company is now looking for a new Bluemercury CEO, who will report to Tony Spring, chairman and CEO of its Bloomingdale’s division.

In addition, Chuck DiGiovanna, currently vice president of real estate, has been appointed to lead Macy’s real estate function. He succeeds Douglas W. Sesler, who is leaving the company.

One familiar industry face remains in the Macy’s executive ranks: Richard Lennox, who formerly headed the De Beers account for J. Walter Thompson and later worked for Zale Corp., currently serves as its chief customer officer. He joined the company in 2016.
