Machine Grades, Measures Diamond Symmetry

Sarine Technologies has developed an automated device that measures facet symmetry in diamonds.

The DiaMension Axiom came about as the result of a request from Tiffany & Co., says David Block, Sarine chief operating officer.

“Grading and symmetry has always been a manual process done by microscope,” Block says. “We started discussing how to develop a system to automate the process, thereby eliminating manual errors.”

The Axiom device, developed with advanced video imagery, measures symmetry in both round and fancy-shape diamonds, including facet junctions, facet misalignment, and facet distortions.

Block says he’s seen interest in the device from manufacturers as well as grading labs, who can customize its specifications based on how they evaluate symmetry.
