Just in time for the FIFA World Cup tournament, which opened June 11 and concludes July 19, the New Orleans antique and jewelry dealer M.S. Rau is showcasing a diamond and gold soccer ball fit for champions. Crafted in more than 523 grams of 18k white gold and covered with 507.5 cts. t.w. black and white natural diamonds in a traditional pentagonal pattern, the precious object measures 5.5 inches in diameter, or about the size of a medium cantaloupe.
While smaller than a standard size soccer ball, it sure does sparkle. “I was thrilled to acquire this diamond-encrusted soccer ball,” third-generation owner Bill Rau tells JCK. “It is one of the more unique objects I’ve seen recently and a luxurious tribute to the world’s most popular sport. How perfect that it’s arriving just in time for the FIFA World Cup.
“There are indeed some big soccer fans at M.S. Rau, so this acquisition was especially fun for us,” he adds. “We’ll even have a staff member attending the World Cup and cheering on England.”
Currently on display in the jewelry department of the New Orleans gallery, a mainstay of Royal Street in the city’s French Quarter, the precious object will remain on view until it sells. It retails for $348,500.
“I expect the soccer ball will appeal to collectors who appreciate exceptional jewelry but also have a strong affinity for sports and conversation-worthy objects,” Rau says.
“I always enjoy working on custom requests at M.S. Rau and have had the privilege of collaborating with clients on a wide range of extraordinary projects, though this marks the gallery’s first gem-set soccer ball,” he adds. “One of the most exciting aspects of M.S. Rau is that extraordinary objects arrive every day, so it’s hard to say what’s around the corner.”
