Luxury retailers scored the biggest gains in June, in what was otherwise considered a mixed month for retail.
High-end department stores Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom both posted strong same-store gains. Saks’ June sales jumped 6 percent; Nordstom’s grew by 8.1 percent.
But mid-range department stores didn’t fare as well. Macy’s June comp sales increased only 1.2 percent, with a release calling the month “below expectations.”
Comps at discounters were similarly mixed. Target said its June same-store sales rose 2.6 percent, but comps at Kohl’s decreased 4.2 percent. Costco’s comps rose 3 percent.
Comp sales at The Bon-Ton Stores fell 0.8 percent, but the department store chain singled out “fine jewelry” as one of its strongest departments.
