Newport Beach, Calif., jeweler Lugano Diamonds is offering a gem of a Mother’s Day gift for clients looking to branch out beyond hydrangea–and–homemade-card territory. The shop’s new “Cake and Pearls” promotion (priced at $500) includes a 65-inch strand of freshwater pearls, plus a custom gift-box–shape cake from neighboring pastry outpost the Sweet & Saucy Shop.

The first prototype of the bejeweled cake was created last year for a client with a sweet tooth. But it wasn’t until the Lugano team was brainstorming internally for Mother’s Day ideas that staffers decided to combine it with a string of pearls.
Cakes and pearls initially may seem like an unlikely combo, but the two “complement each other because they’re both beautiful and the best of the best,” says Moti Ferder, president and design director of Lugano Diamonds. “Customers can have their cake and eat it, too,” he quips.
The promotion’s packaging is as unabashedly girly as its name: The cake and pearls both arrive in branded silk gift bags, wrapped in an oversized bow.
