Live Blogging the 61st Annual Tony Awards (Part I)

I ran home to make the Tony’s this evening & having seen many shows this year I’m excited to be watching & sharing my thoughts with all of you.

Ok, let’s go ….

A little before 8pm
I only caught a bit of the red carpet coverage on NY1, but saw a snippet of Audra McDonald’s interview. She mentioned her jewelry for the evening. She is wearing a ring around her neck, given to her by her father before his death. Tonight is the 5 week anniversary of his death She managed not to miss a single performance of 110 in the Shade, for which she is nominated & in which she was phenomenal.

It goes to show what a powerful statement can be made with family heirlooms and sentiment as opposed to carat count.

Opening Sequence
The cast of A Chorus Line performs outside of Radio City. I saw ACL in previews & wasn’t floored, but glad to see how true to period the revival was. Obviously, there wasn’t much jewelry to be seen as this is a “dance show” and wouldn’t really be practical, but what true Broadway fan doesn’t love the mention of a 5,6,7,8 & champagne jump suits?

8:05pm
For the second year, the Tony’s will go hostless. Instead, the program will have presenters giving out awards in the 25 categories. Four time winner and nominee this evening, Angela Lansbury is up first. She parts the kick line center stage and greets the crowd wearing an elegant array of diamonds. Perhaps Rob could fill us in on who she’s wearing if my digging doesn’t turn anything up.

Best Performance of a Featured Actor in a Play
Doogie Howser & Kelly Bundy (I couldn’t help myself) Neil Patrick Harris (fresh off of his 2004 run in Assassins) & Christina Applegate (2005 revival of Sweet Charity) presenting. She is wearing a pair of oval, sliver drop earrings. Let’s see if the bare necked trend is prevalent this evening as it has been this awards season showing just how pervasive the blood diamond controversy has been.

Winner: Crudup for The Coast of Utopia. I didn’t see this play. Honestly, I was rooting for Anthony Chisholm of August Wilson’s Radio Golf.

Best Performance of a Featured Actor in a Musical
Vanessa Williams with her clavicles on parade as well, opting for the diamond studded drops to show her regal neck. Robert Sean Leonard, a three-time Tony Award nominee who won a Tony in 2001 for his role in Tom Stoppard’s The Invention of Love also presented. You’ll remember him from Dead Poets, okay that might just me me.

And so it begins Spring Awakening takes its first Tony.

Best Book of a Musical
Spring Awakening gets it’s second award. We also see that bare necks are going to be the look of the evening.

I saw Spring Awakening. I was distracted by the hair. Great story, brilliant performances, weird hair. See below or click here.
