The Kimberley Process has brought attention to the reported attacks by the rebel alliance Seleka near diamond-producing areas in the Central African Republic, including Bria, Sam Ouandja, and Bamingui.
As a safety measure, former KP chairwoman Gillian Milovanovic has urged KP participating governments and members of the diamond industry to remain vigilant regarding the possible introduction of rough diamonds into the supply chain by Seleka or its allies. She issued two documents of reference:
- A “footprint” prepared for diamond production of the Bria region by the Working Group of Diamond Experts
- A map prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey plotting rough diamond occurrences and media reports of attacks by the Seleka alliance
