Shin-Ryeong Kim of South Korea has been named the 92nd Street Y’s 2024 jewelry artist in residence and will work in its New York studios from Aug. 19 through Sept. 15.

An award-winning jewelry designer, Kim has exhibited her work throughout Korea and in group shows in Chicago and New York. She also has been featured in group exhibitions in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, France, and Poland.

“In the fine tradition of Korean metalwork, this art is masterful,” said Jonathan Wahl, director of the Jewelry Center at the 92nd Street Y (92NY), in a statement. “We’re delighted to welcome Shin-Ryeong…. The residency is designed to provide time, space, and facilities for research, experimentation, and the cultivation of new ideas in jewelry and light metalwork, all while giving the artist an immersive experience in the vibrant world of New York City and 92NY’s arts and culture.”

Kim, who has undergraduate and master’s degrees in metals and jewelry from Kookmin University in Seoul, was chosen by a panel of judges including Wahl; John Stuart Gordon, a curator of American decorative arts at Yale University Art Gallery; and Helen Drutt, curatorial consultant and art historian.

Illusion is a common theme in Shin-Ryeong Kim’s jewelry, which has been in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.

“We’re thrilled to receive applications from around the world, and we’re looking forward to hosting her in August and September,” Wahl added.

In her application, the artist said, “New York City is a diverse hub of cultures and arts, boasting unique architectural features and a variety of spaces. I anticipate that the city’s complexity will enrich the contradictions between reality and perception that my work seeks to explore.

“The architecture and spaces in New York can provide sensations like those created in my virtual spaces. Additionally, interacting with diverse artists in the city will not only enhance my understanding of the global market but also allow me to share stories of excellent contemporary jewelry artists from Korea.”

Kim is the sixth person selected for the jewelry residency, which is supported by 92NY board member Kathy Chazen. Previous Jewelry Center artists in residence were Sungho Cho (2023), Alexander Blank (2022), Claudia Lepik (2019), Ineke Heerkens (2018), and Göran Kling (2017).
