Princess Catherine Returns to BAFTAs in Historic Family Jewels

Share

Catherine, Princess of Wales made her first appearance at the BAFTA Film Awards since 2023 over the weekend, opting for historic diamond jewels from the royal family’s collection to complement her Gucci gown.

For the so-called British Oscars at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday night, Catherine dressed in a blush- and raspberry-toned Gucci gown she first wore in 2019—aligning with the evening’s emphasis on sustainable luxury. She made an equally significant statement with her choice of historic diamonds.

The focal point of the princess’ look was a pair of Cartier chandelier earrings that have become a hallmark of her most formal appearances. The intricate platinum-set shoulder dusters were commissioned between 1918 and 1929 by society hostess Margaret Greville and later bequeathed to the Queen Mother and eventually passed to Queen Elizabeth II. Their architectural, multi-cut diamond drops provided a sharp, geometric contrast to the soft draping of Catherine’s gown and showed how archival jewelry can feel refreshingly current on the red carpet.

Also highlighting how historic pieces can be dynamic and made entirely modern, the princess repurposed an art deco diamond bar choker as a bracelet. The 1920s piece, which had belonged to Queen Mary, features a rhythmic, linear arrangement of diamonds that embodies the aesthetic of the Jazz Age.

Princess Catherine’s BAFTA jewelry served as a reminder of her ability to use her access to the vaults to support a larger message. She selected the jewels not just for glitz and glamour, but as an intentional display of royal history, to reinforce a sense of stability and timelessness on the world stage.
