And Just Like That, Matilde Jewellery Gets a Chance to Cuff Charlotte York

Matilde Faria Mourinho is a longtime fan of Sex and the City, so the designer jumped at the opportunity to feature her jewelry on the show’s revival, And Just Like That... One of her pieces will have a starring role on Charlotte York’s wrist when the series’ second season premieres June 22 on streaming service Max.

The London-based Mourinho, who introduced Matilde Jewellery in December 2020, spoke to JCK via an email interview about her sustainable fine jewelry brand, offering jewelry for women of every age, and the Onda cuff that will be worn by the always stylish Charlotte (Kristin Davis).

Have you always been a fan of Sex and the City?

I grew up seeing my mum religiously watch Sex and the City and was just obsessed with everything about it, from the characters to the fashion to the way the show portrays what a “modern woman” is. I then went on to watch the movies, the Carrie Diaries show which was a sort of prequel about Carrie Bradshaw, and then of course And Just Like That…

Were you excited that Charlotte in particular would wear your work? She’s my style icon of the show.

I’ve always loved her character and found her so funny. I also think she always stayed true to herself throughout the whole show, and her style was always so chic and elegant and put-together. She somewhat reminds me of my mum’s style, which is probably why she’s one of my favorites.

Is there a special meaning to the piece Charlotte wears?

The cuff is called the Onda, meaning wave in Portuguese, and I love how elegant but unique it is. It’s an organic-shaped band, which is a common theme throughout the collection, and it’s delicate yet bold enough to command attention. It has a trilogy of lab-grown diamonds that sits at its center, and they are stars of the piece. It features three classic shapes of diamonds—pear, oval, and solitaire—and for me it’s the perfect contemporary cuff and a modern icon you won’t want to take off.

Do your target consumers include mature women like Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York, and friends?

I prefer to think of it as ageless, and I always say that I really believe there is something in our full range for everyone. I think this is because all the pieces are timeless and not necessarily trend-led, but they still have a modern twist. From a younger woman looking for more delicate minimal pieces, to a young adult who is starting to invest into growing their staple and timeless jewelry collection, to a more established woman who is treating herself and knows what she wants but isn’t afraid to modernize that a little, I love how there is something for everyone. I also think it’s a brand that consumers can grow alongside with.

What other news about your brand can I share?

We have our brand-new summer collection, Tróia, that launched in the month of May, and I cannot wait for everyone to be able to see it. It’s inspired by my childhood and the endless summers spent on the beaches of Portugal, where I am from, and it was such a fun collection to design. We shot the campaign in Portugal on the same beach I have gone to since I was a child, so that was special.
